What casino apps declare, category by category
Each row shows how many of the 14 operator apps in our index list the category on their App Store label, and how many place it in “Data Used to Track You”.
| Category | Linked to you | Used to track you | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | 8 | 3 | Required in Ontario and Alberta to prove you are in the province. Expected. |
| Contact Info | 12 | 2 | Name, address, email and phone for your account and identity check. Expected. |
| Financial Info | 7 | 0 | Payment details for deposits and withdrawals. Expected. |
| User Content | 5 | 1 | ID photos and selfies for verification, messages to support. Expected. |
| Identifiers | 13 | 9 | Account and device IDs. Expected for fraud checks; in the tracking group it means advertising use. |
| Usage Data | 9 | 6 | What you tap and play. Common for analytics; in the tracking group it feeds advertising. |
| Search History | 1 | 1 | What you search inside the app. Rarely needed by a casino. |
| Diagnostics | 4 | 3 | Crash and performance logs. Harmless when not linked to you. |
The pattern is clear. Location, contact, financial and ID data are the price of a regulated, verified account. Identifiers and usage data in the tracking group are not required by any province; they reflect each operator’s marketing choices.
02 / Google Play
The Data safety section on Android
Google Play splits the declaration differently: data collected and data shared with other companies, each with a purpose such as app functionality, analytics, fraud prevention or advertising. Two things are worth noticing. First, a few casino apps declare that they collect and share no data at all, which is hard to reconcile with the identity check every regulated operator must run. Second, some declare categories you would not expect from a casino. We quote these statements as the developers made them; our Android guide lists them app by app.
03 / Fake apps
Spotting a fake casino app
- Wrong developer. The company under the app title has nothing to do with the casino.
- Wrong source. A download link arrived by text message, social media or an ad, not from the store or the operator’s site.
- No location check. A regulated app always checks where you are before you play.
- Odd payments. Requests to pay a person directly or to use gift cards.
- Too good to be true. Promises that you will win, which no regulated operator may make.
If an app you already installed fails one of these checks, delete it and change the password you used in it. Call your bank if you entered card details. Then report the listing to Apple or Google from its store page, and tell the operator whose name it used; registered operators have every reason to get copies of their apps taken down.
04 / On your phone
Phone permissions versus the store label
The store label describes what the developer says it does with data. The permission prompts on your phone are what the app can actually reach. They are separate layers, and both are worth a look. A casino app needs location while it is open, and the camera once for your identity check. It has no reason to ask for your contacts, your microphone, Bluetooth or other apps on the phone.
- iPhone: Settings, then the app’s name, shows every permission it holds; Settings, Privacy and Security, Tracking shows which apps may ask to track you.
- Android: long-press the app icon, App info, Permissions. Set location to “Allow only while using the app”.
If an app stops working after you refuse a permission it has no reason to need, that tells you something about the app.
Review permissions again after major updates. An app that adds a new feature, such as uploading documents through the camera roll, may ask for broader access than it had before. Grant the narrowest option each time: selected photos rather than the whole library, location only while the app is open, and no background refresh unless you want notifications. On a shared family phone, also set a screen lock for the casino app or keep it off the device entirely, so that nobody under the legal age can open it. Both iOS and Android can lock individual apps behind a passcode or Face ID through their screen-time and parental settings, which takes a minute to set up.
Is this app safe?
Four questions to answer before you install a casino app. They take a minute and they catch most copycat apps.
06 / FAQ
Casino app safety: questions
How can I tell if a casino app is fake?
Check three things: the developer name in the store matches the casino operator, the app came from the store or the operator’s own site, and the operator is registered or licensed for your province. A fake app usually fails the first or second check.
Is a casino app that collects lots of data unsafe?
Not necessarily. Identity checks need personal and financial data. What deserves attention is data declared as “used to track you”, which leaves the operator for advertising.
Does Apple or Google check privacy labels?
No. Both stores publish what developers declare and act on reports of false declarations, but they do not audit each label in advance.
What should I do if I installed a fake casino app?
Delete it, change any password you entered, and tell your bank if you entered card or banking details. Report the app to the store.
Can a casino app read my contacts or photos?
Only with your permission, and iOS and Android both ask first. A casino app needs your camera once for the identity check; it has no reason to read your contacts.
